About

A north-facing room, and enough time

Painter. Oil, raw pigment and ink. Working out of one room in Bengaluru since 2016.

The studio: a tall north window, a canvas on an easel, and finished works leaning against the wall.

I paint slowly, in layers, in a room that only ever gets one kind of light.

My work starts outdoors — at an estuary, a reservoir edge, a stretch of coast at the hour before anything opens — but it isn’t made there. I bring back notes, a few colour swatches, and whatever I can still remember a week later. What survives that week is usually the painting.

The surfaces are built up and scraped back many times. Oil on linen for the larger pieces; raw pigment bound thin on cotton rag for the works on paper. Nothing is varnished to a shine. I want the light to sit in the surface rather than bounce off it, the way it does on plaster or on a wet stone that is just starting to dry.

I show two or three times a year and take a small number of commissions. The rest of the time I’m in the studio, or out early, looking.

The particulars

What the work is made of

Layered horizontal bands of terracotta, amber and sand.

Materials

Belgian linen, cotton rag, and pigment ground by hand. A short list, used repeatedly, until it stops being a decision.

A cream sky with an ochre disc above a low band of moss green.

Influences

Agnes Martin’s patience, Indian miniature grounds, and the flat grey-gold light of the Deccan in August.

A dusty rose ellipse overlapped by a terracotta form.

The studio

One room, north light, no music before noon. Everything dries slowly, which is rather the point.

Seven rounded vertical columns in sage and ochre.

Teaching

A small pigment and ground workshop twice a year, six people at a time, in the studio.
